The Virgin and Child from Røldal stood inside a tabernacle shrine with scenes on the insides of the wings. One wing is preserved (see no. 3). The Madonna was probably situated on a Lady altar on the north side in the nave of the stave church, opposite from an altar with a sculpture of St Olav, also inside a tabernacle shrine (see no. 9). From the same stave church, several other medieval elements are preserved. These rich furnishings reflect the ambitions, resources, and networks in the local community. As an ensemble, these preserved objects give a rare impression of the interior of a country church in northern Europe during the High Middle Ages.
